Description

In this letter from Captain William M. McArthur of the 8th Regiment, Maine Volunteers, to his father, Arthur McArthur, Sr., MacArthur describes his regiment's overall health as it readies itself for a march to Jacksonville, Florida.

MacArthur, a Mason, writes of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina's decision to grant a dispensation to the Masons of the 48th Regiment, New York Volunteers, at Fort Pulaski to open a lodge. McArthur also recounts the story of a chaplain from the 9th Regiment, Maine Volunteers, whose brother-in-law had been cared for by Masons from the 6th Regiment, Louisiana Volunteers, after the first Battle of Bull Run. Dated March 8, 1863.
