Letter of appointment of Edmund B. Hays as Sovereign Grand Commander of the Supreme Council for the Northern Jurisdiction of the Western Hemisphere, 1858 May 14

This manuscript certificate issued by the Sovereign Grand Commander of the Supreme Council for the Northern Jurisdiction of the Western Hemisphere, Henry C. Atwood, appoints Edmund B. Hays as his successor-in-waiting. Upon Atwood’s death in 1860, Hays became Sovereign Grand Commander, and on the certificate’s reverse, the members of the Supreme Council for the Northern Jurisdiction of the Western Hemisphere certify Hays appointment as Sovereign Grand Commander on October 8, 1860. In 1863, the Hays’ Supreme Council merged with the Raymond Supreme Council to become the Hays-Raymond Supreme Council.
