Letter from Giles F. Yates to John James Joseph Gourgas, 1827 October 29

Letter from Giles F. Yates to John James Joseph Gourgas. Dated October 29, 1827. In this letter, Yates, a member of the Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction, and Sovereign of Sovereigns of Albany Sovereign Consistory, writes he has received Gourgas’ letter of October 27. Reports that the man copying the Egyptian Mysteries has not finished; Gourgas, a member of the Supreme Council, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, should expect it in a week. Yates will try to send the tableau when his Grand Council of Princes of Jerusalem meets next winter. Western New York is a “scene of strife and confusion;” the Morgan affair has forced many Masons to denounce Freemasonry “and vouch for the truth of Morgan’s book.” Yates does not believe the discovered body is Morgan’s, but this discovery has given the Anti-Masons a “cause of triumph.” Discloses Colonel Simeon B. Jewett, the Grand Master of “Yates' Lodge of Perfection” in Onondaga County, has typhus fever, and Brother B. has secured his manuscripts. The Lodge has not met since last winter because of the Morgan affair, which has distilled all politics to those who are Masonic or Anti-Masonic. Thanks Gourgas for the present of the History of the Templars and reports he has found a seller of copy machines in New York City.
