Letter from Giles F. Yates to John James Joseph Gourgas. Dated October 1, 1827. In this letter, Yates, a member of the Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction, and Sovereign of Sovereigns of Albany Sovereign Consistory, writes to Gourgas, a member of the Supreme Council, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, that he has been busy and has not had time to attend to his Masonic duties. He reports the Morgan affair will stifle Freemasonry for some time; however, it will also lead to the purification of Freemasonry. Yates reveals Albany Sovereign Consistory will not be able to produce its returns until the following annual meeting of the Supreme Council, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. He reports he has asked the lodge in Montgomery County for its returns, but the Morgan affair has prevented it from meeting. Yates explains the difficulties in obtaining lodge returns from upstate New York and attaches the returns of Oriental Lodge of Perfection of Saratoga Springs and Delta Lodge of Perfection. He will send Gourgas a copy of the Egyptian Mysteries.
