Manuscript copy of a letter from John James Joseph Gourgas to Charles W. Moore. Dated September 3, 1845. In this manuscript copy of a letter, Sovereign Grand Commander Gourgas of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction inquires as to why the Supreme Council’s circular has not been published yet in Moore’s Freemasons’ Monthly Magazine. Gourgas states that Moore has been in communication with the Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction, regarding the Supreme Council, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, and demands all communication with the Southern Jurisdiction “ought to be immediately handed over to us.” He reminds Moore that last May Edward Raymond requested a list of Sublime Brethren be published immediately, but Moore has yet to publish this list. Gourgas chides Moore that we are all “sacredly bound not to forget that matters in these degrees are to be conducted and attended to -- with the very same scrupulous regard to exactness and promptitude in all our relative duties, as in Craft Masonry.” Otherwise, Scottish Rite Freemasonry will “hang on dull, sleepy and die away.”
