Title

Manuscript copy of a letter from Moses Holbrook to John Henry Holland, 1830 May 17

Description

Manuscript copy of a letter from Moses Holbrook to John Henry Holland. Dated May 17, 1830. Copied in John James Joseph Gourgas’ hand, this letter from Sovereign Grand Commander Holbrook of the Southern Jurisdiction acknowledges John Henry Holland’s efforts to contact him and refutes Holland’s claims that the Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction, has overstepped its powers. Holbrook replies that on May 12, 1812, Louis Jean M. Lusson and his group established a Consistory in New Orleans, well before the establishment of the Consistory by Joseph Cerneau. Holbrook denounces the “game which Joseph Cerneau and Germain Haquet played through their personal friends” in the Grand Orient of France and outlines the establishment of the Sublime Degrees in Charleston, South Carolina. Hoping to have persuaded Holland as to the legitimacy of the Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction, Holbrook presents a plan for the integration of Louisiana’s Scottish Rite Freemasons into the Southern Jurisdiction.
