Title

Letter from Moses Holbrook to John James Joseph Gourgas, 1830 October 30

Description

Letter from Moses Holbrook to John James Joseph Gourgas. Dated October 30, 1830. In this letter, Sovereign Grand Commander Holbrook of the Southern Jurisdiction comments that his health is “now fast improving” after being “so seriously afflicted with” sunstroke. Reports that he enjoys the extracts in Gourgas’ letter of September 28, 1830, “proving that ‘virtue should be cultivated as a science,’ and that our ‘Great work’ should be ‘the Restoration of moral Man.’” Holbrook states he has written to John Fowler of Dublin, who has provided evidence that has refuted Sam Anderton and the Boston Anti-Masons' claim that Miller was murdered in Belfast by Freemasons in 1813. He thanks Gourgas for introducing the Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction, to the French Supreme Council. Topics covered also include Clavel’s prospectus, the governments of Spain and Portugal, the French Revolution, and the Stuarts of England. States that Freemasonry is at low tide in South Carolina because of funds and politics. Concludes by hailing the death of Nullification.
