Description
Letter from Moses Holbrook to John James Joseph Gourgas. Dated August 21, 1830. In this letter, Sovereign Grand Commander Holbrook of the Southern Jurisdiction comments on François-Timoleon Begue Clavel’s prospectus, an advertisement for his upcoming book, Histoire Pittoresque de la Franc-Mac̦onnerie et des Sociétés Secrèts Anciennes et Modernes. Holbrook believes Clavel’s work will be “useful to the prosperity of the order” and denounces Jeremy Cross and his wandering lecturers’ efforts to advance “any knowledge of the science of Freemasonry.” If Gourgas does add his name to the list of subscribers for Clavel’s work, Holbrook asks Gourgas to add his name, as well. Reports that C. C. Sebring, a member of the Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction, has been in Mexico for nearly three years and concludes by stating, “The political fever still rages with violence and bitterness.”
