Title

Letter from Moses Holbrook to John James Joseph Gourgas, 1830 March 10

Description

Letter from Moses Holbrook to John James Joseph Gourgas. Dated March 10, 1830. In this letter, Sovereign Grand Commander Holbrook of the Southern Jurisdiction passes along a copy of a letter from John Holland that came into his possession through Perez Snell of New Orleans. In his February 19, 1830, letter, Holland outlines the establishment Scottish Rite Freemasonry in New Orleans and Louisiana under Joseph Cerneau. Holland states that the Grand Orient of France has refused to clarify the legitimacy of the competing Scottish Rite bodies, Cerneau and the Southern Jurisdiction, after prematurely committing itself to Joseph Cerneau through the agency of Germain Haquet. The General Grand Chapter of the United States has acknowledged the Southern Jurisdiction’s Grand Chapter, as well as the Southern Jurisdictions authority over Louisiana. The state should join with the Southern Juridiction, Holland concludes. Holbrook asks Gourgas write Holland.
