Title

Letter from Moses Holbrook to John James Joseph Gourgas, 1829 March 30

Description

Letter from Moses Holbrook to John James Joseph Gourgas. Dated March 30, 1829. In this letter, Sovereign Grand Commander Holbrook of the Southern Jurisdiction writes that the Southern Supreme Council “expressed great satisfaction and thankfulness” for the “handsome reply to Paris and for the uncommonly neat and handsome manner” that Gourgas had copied it. Comments that “DeGrasse must be in his dotage to ask” for “blank powers” from the Southern Supreme Council. Notes that Frederick Dalcho cannot recollect how John Mitchell received the thirty-third degree; he may have received it from a “Prussian who was in Charleston.” Concludes by stating he still “occasionally” suffers from Dengue but that his “hands are often so swollen” he cannot write.
