Title

Letter from Moses Holbrook to John James Joseph Gourgas, 1828 October 17

Description

Letter from Moses Holbrook to John James Joseph Gourgas. Dates October 17, 1828. In this letter, Sovereign Grand Commander Holbrook of the Southern Jurisdiction reports he has received no word from the Jamaican Supreme Council after having written to it “5 or 6 years ago.” Holbrook reports he has attempted to obtain information from New Orleans and Perez Snell. Snell eventually relayed to Holbrook his conversation with John Holland, the Grand Commander of the New Orleans Consistory, which was established by the Sovereign Grand Council of the U.S. of A., a Cerneau body. Snell reported that Holland, who had believed Cerneau was legitimate, now wished to apply for a charter from the Southern Jurisdiction. Holland stated to Snell that New Orleans Consistory had been chartered by the Grand Orient of France and was directed to acknowledge Cerneau’s authority. Holbrook concludes by thanking Gourgas for his anti-Masonic newspapers and comments upon his health.
