Description
Letter from Moses Holbrook to John James Joseph Gourgas. Dated November 29, 1827. In this letter, Sovereign Grand Commander Holbrook of the Southern Jurisdiction informs Gourgas that John Barker has Sovereign Grand Commander John Mitchell’s Scottish Rite degree. He states that Peter Javain, a Cerneau follower, was able to retrieve part of Mitchell’s papers, and the other part of Mitchell’s papers fell into the hands of a young Freemason from Alabama, who stole them. After Barker retrieves the original and a copy, the Southern Jurisdiction’s Supreme Council will forward the two to Gourgas. With regard to copying the Orders of Templar, Holbrook believes there is no reason why the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction cannot examine them. Holbrook is also glad to hear there is a chance to defend Count De Grasse and comments upon the Grand Orient making Joseph-Napoléon Bonaparte its Grand Master. Wishes Antoine L. Moret success in extending the “genuine principles at Paris.”
