Letter from Moses Holbrook to John James Joseph Gourgas, 1827 July 23
Description
Letter from Moses Holbrook to John James Joseph Gourgas. Dated July 23, 1827. In this letter, Sovereign Grand Commander Holbrook of the Southern Jurisdiction acknowledges Gourgas past communications of July 8-12 and sends a bundle of manuscripts for his inspection. Holbrook provides Gourgas with a red list of spurious or clandestine Freemasons from New York, Louisiana, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and Charleston, South Carolina. The list includes the names of Joseph Cerneau, Governor DeWitt Clinton, and Joel R. Poinsett. Holbrook states that he will copy “‘the document’ (oblig.)” and that his Supreme Council, except for Frederic Dalcho and Moses Clava Levy, will sign it. Believes that Mary Hanlon’s Revelations of Masonry is “nonsense” and William Morgan is alive. Concludes by stating that there is no word from Boston.
