Letter from Moses Holbrook to John James Joseph Gourgas, 1827 March 26
Description
Letter from Moses Holbrook to John James Joseph Gourgas . Dated March 26, 1827. In this letter, Sovereign Grand Commander Holbrook of the Southern Jurisdiction acknowledges Gourgas’ letter of March 10, 1827, and states that his Supreme Council has never established more than one Consistory in a state. Holbrook discusses a variety of administrative issues: the issue of fees for candidates, diplomas, and charters; dispensations granted; and the Southern Jurisdiction’s method of chartering. Holbrook refers to a letter received from Lafayette, dated December 30, 1826, and would like for Cerneau’s followers in Charleston to surrender their charter to Cerneau and transfer their allegiance to the Southern Jurisdiction. Concludes by comparing William Morgan to the U.S. Senator from New York, Martin Van Buren, who is now in Charleston on political matters.
