Description

Letter from Moses Holbrook to John James Joseph Gourgas. Dated December 13, 1826. In this letter from Sovereign Grand Commander Moses Holbrook of the Southern Jurisdiction, Holbrook expresses the Southern Jurisdiction’s gratitude for Gourgas’ help. Holbrook also discusses his communications with John Fowler and Thomas MacGill of the Supreme Council of Ireland, as well as the Duke of Sussex and the formation of a Supreme Councils in England and Scotland. Holbrook states that he will send Joseph M’Cosh’s 1823 pamphlet, Documents Upon Sublime Free-masonry in the United States of America to Gourgas and his fellow Supreme Council officers (Sampson Simson, Richard Riker, and Moses Levi Maduro Peixotto), but fears that they will be intercepted by the Post Master Thomas W. Bacot, “one of the persons so often alluded to in the pamphlet.” Concludes by listing the 14 states of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction and compares the two Jurisdiction’s populations.
