Title

The Moon boardinghouse card, between 1862 and 1864

Description

The Moon boardinghouse card. Dated between 1862 and 1864. This patriotic business card for Frederick Stieringer’s boardinghouse, “The Moon,” most likely served as an advertisement to soldiers and the family members of wounded Union soldiers who were housed at the nearby Soldiers' Depôt at 50-52 Howard Street. IRS records and the 1862-1863 New York City directory lists Frederick Stieringer as the owner of “The Moon.” It was established in 1862, the year before the Soldiers' Depôt was organized, and resided on Howard Street until sometime in 1864.
