Letter from John James Joseph Gourgas to Giles F. Yates, 1827 October 6

Letter from John James Joseph Gourgas to Giles F. Yates. Dated October 6, 1827. In this letter, Gourgas, a member of the Supreme Council, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, acknowledges the receipt of Yates’ letter of September 21. He apologizes for not being able to send François Henri Stanislas de L'Aulnaye’s book, Thuileur des Trente-trois Degrés de l'Ecossisme du Rit Ancien, dit Accepté and two other books. Comments upon the “misguided fanatical zeal” of Anti-Masonry. Gourgas thanks Yates for the book on Egyptian Mysteries. He reports Holbrook has sent the returns for Albany Sovereign Consistory but could not find the returns for the Grand Council Princes of Jerusalem and Grand Lodges of Perfection. Gourgas stresses that Yates must send the lodges’ returns soon so that they may be sent to the Grand and Supreme Councils and Consistories of Europe and the West Indies. He reminds Yates that Albany Sovereign Consistory cannot be issued a charter unless a regularly charted Sovereign Chapter of the Rose Croix already exists. Therefore, the charter issued by the Southern Jurisdiction to Albany Sovereign Consistory must be resigned to the Supreme Council, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, which will exchange it for a charter for the Rose Croix Chapter and Consistory.
